The Key to Finding Our Way Through Hard Times

Finding Our Way In Hard Times

A friend going through a rough patch asked how she could get through it faster. I assured her that if I knew, I would have shared the secret long ago, and used it myself. But the truth is, sometimes the only way through hard times is through them. There are no shortcuts.

This concept is simple, but we often resist it. Seriously, who wants to sit in discomfort any longer than necessary? In our current “quick fix” era, the temptation to sprint past difficulty is real. Trust me, I get it. If I were a Little Miss character, I'd be Miss Fix It. But while quick fixes may offer temporary relief, they often rob us of the deeper lessons that only time and presence can bring.

I'm not saying we should wallow in misery, struggle unnecessarily, or make suffering our identity. What I am saying is that challenges have a way of holding up a mirror, showing us who we are, what matters most, and the quality of our relationships. Too often, when we rush to escape hard times, we miss the growth, resilience, and clarity those challenges can bring.

To be clear: I don't subscribe to the belief that “everything happens for a reason.” Sometimes bad things happen because people make harmful choices, whether intentional or not. I also don't believe that you must go through pain to grow. We can learn just as much from beauty, joy, and grace as we can from hardship. But the reality is, if we live long enough, life will hand us some trials. So the question isn't if but how we respond when those moments come.

For many of us, the default is to run, deny, or numb. But since we can't make the pain disappear, the real work is learning how to walk through it. That starts with presence: acknowledging what is, being honest about how we feel, and creating a vision for where we want to be on the other side. From there, it's about taking deliberate steps forward—sometimes small, sometimes halting, but always intentional.

As someone who works in the personal development space, I deeply believe in our capacity to shape better lives, but I also know there's no magic seminar, coaching session, or affirmation that can erase hardship overnight. Those tools can be powerful, but they are not panaceas. They help us shift perspective, expand possibility, and build the skills to move through difficulty with more clarity and courage.

So no, there's no shortcut through the valley. But we can choose how we journey through it. Here are a few practices that help:

  • Face the facts. Acknowledge the reality of the situation. What we resist really does persist.

  • Ask the question. “What can I learn from this?” Not from a place of toxic positivity, but as a way to find meaning in the mess.

  • Check your posture. Are you stuck in blame, or are you taking responsibility for what you can control?

  • Care for yourself. Body, mind, spirit, soul. As Audre Lorde tells us, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation…”

  • Lean on your people. Coaches, therapists, or your sistah squad, we're not meant to do this alone.

  • Make space for joy. Hard times may be in your story right now, but they don't have to be the whole story. As Alice Walker says, “hard times require furious dancing.”

And finally, remember the wisdom of India Arie: “Even the day after tomorrow will one day be yesterday…this too shall pass.”

So while we can't fast-forward through difficulty, we can walk through it with presence and intention; and that choice can make all the difference.
