No Expiration Date on Dreams

As I shared last year, this season always gets me thinking about the idea of resurrection, not so much in the religious or Christian sense, but in the sense of resurrection's broader meaning of revival, of bringing something back to life, practice, or use again. In particular, being a coach, I think about what it means to revive old hopes, dreams, and ambitions.  Probably the best example of this is my Uncle Eric, who, at the tender age of 75, graduated with his doctorate in theology. Being the proud niece that I am, I'm sharing it again in the hope that it will inspire you, no matter your age, to resurrect your old hopes and dreams…

Achieving a doctorate is a major undertaking and accomplishment for anyone. But in my Uncle's case, it's especially poignant because in the late 1960s, when he was an undergrad at one of Ghana's most prestigious universities, he had to leave school due to familial commitments. It was not until he was nearly 70, and himself a grandfather many times over, that he was able to return to school. He first received his long-hoped bachelor's degree before going on to complete his master's and then doctoral degree as valedictorian of his class.

I share this because Uncle Eric's story is a real-life example of what it means to resurrect our dreams and to make them a reality. I'm sure there were people who looked at my uncle askance as he completed his enrollment forms, sat in classes with people who were young enough to be his grandkids' playmates, and brushed up on the latest technology. But he held fast to his dream and embodied the idea that it's never too late.

What dream or ambition do you want to resurrect? Perhaps, like my uncle, you have an academic goal; maybe you want to start a business, travel the world, or simply take up that hobby you've always dreamed of. Whatever it is, I'm here to remind you that your dreams are valid and that in pursuing them, you'll most likely inspire others just as my uncle has done for me and the many classmates who lauded him on graduation day.

With that said, I know that pursuing our dreams isn't always easy; there are the realities of time, financial resources, and opportunities to be managed. While my uncle had to wait for his seventh decade to pursue his dream fully, he planned, studied, and took steps along the way to ensure that when the time was right, he could make his dream a reality. If you'd like support creating a plan to resurrect your hopes and ambitions, consider coaching, book a discovery call today.
